Michigan Abortion Payment Law Upheld

Associated Press

The Michigan Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a law banning state-paid abortions for poor women, reversing a lower court that had found it unconstitutional.

The high court held, 5 to 2, that the state does not violate the equal-protection clause of the Michigan Constitution by agreeing to pay the bills for some births but not for abortions.

The court said women remain free to have abortions with private funds.
