Health Officials Fear Lead Contamination, Recall Imported Juices

California health officials recalled several types of Jumex canned juices Tuesday, saying the products imported from Mexico may contain dangerous levels of lead.
Jumex juices, imported by Vilore Foods, are found primarily in small ethnic grocery stores, but the product has also been distributed in some statewide chain supermarkets, including a Lucky’s in San Diego, officials said.
The 12-ounce cans of juices have lead-soldered seams, officials said, and when the lead interacts with the acid in the juice, a chemical reaction occurs that causes the lead to seep into the juice.
The recalled Jumex juices include those made from plum, apricot, apple, guava, mango, papaya-pineapple, peach, pear, pineapple and tamarind.
