THE $7 TICKET: You can’t really go anywhere on vacation for $7, but Amtrak is pushing that figure in its summer promotions. It costs $23 one way from Santa Ana to Santa Barbara, for example, but just $30 round trip. Amtrak official Debbie Wood says many Orange County vacationers are taking the train north to avoid gridlock going through Los Angeles. . . . “Gas alone would cost you $30,” she says, “but mainly you save on aggravation.”

Amtrak officials are promoting vacations by train as a cheaper and more relaxing way to travel.
