Fake Art: Two Italian art experts have been indicted on charges of forging 79 drawings they claimed were previously unknown sketches by Amedeo Modigliani, a prosecutor said Tuesday. Art critic Osvaldo Patani and researcher Alberindo Grimani claimed last year to have discovered 79 pencil and ink drawings done by Modigliani in his youth, which they then exhibited in Viterbo, a city north of Rome. Modigliani’s descendants denounced the drawings as fakes, and the works were placed under judicial custody while a magistrate investigated the charge and a committee of experts examined the works. A conviction for forgery carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.
