Trash Train’s Load Headed Back to N.Y.

KEARNY, N.J. — Turned away by three states, a train loaded with 2,200 tons of smelly, bug-infested New York City garbage began unloading Friday so the trash can be sent right back to its source.
Crews began unloading the Conrail train’s 90 less-than-appealing containers almost immediately after it arrived in Kearny. The containers were evicted from three states in more than a week, Conrail spokeswoman Andrea Just said.
The containers were destined for New York City’s overstuffed Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, where the contents would be dumped after inspection by city and state environmental and health officials.
