WRETCHED REFUSE

Reviewer Ed Zuckerman and authors William Rathje and Cullen Murphy (“Rubbish! The Archaeology of Garbage,” June 28) are correct. We can continue turning canyon after canyon into new landfills that tell us exciting new things about ourselves (How about Spam? Are we eating more or less? What about lime Kool-Aid?), and then top them off with housing developments or shopping malls.

But who will bring back the fresh canyon updraft? The clean stream? The lupin and the red-tailed hawk?
