Fischer Plans Chess Rematch With Spassky

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — Chess master Bobby Fischer will play a $5-million rematch with Russian Boris Spassky after nearly 20 years in seclusion, according to news reports Tuesday.

The match is to begin Sept. 2 on Sveti Stefan, a Yugoslav resort island on the Adriatic coast.

According to a Swiss report, Fischer’s playing contract allows him to choose a new venue if gunfire from the Yugoslav war can be heard at the rematch site.

The match is being organized by Jezdimir Vasiljevic, a Serbian bank owner who has offered $3.35 million to the winner and $1.65 million to the loser.

Vasiljevic has been quoted as saying he orchestrated the match as an “open war” on U.N. sanctions against Yugoslavia.
