New Kind of Tomato to Be Test-Marketed: DNA Plant Technology of Cinnaminson, N.J., said a new kind of tomato will be on some grocery shelves by 1993. The Vinesweet brand tomato was developed through a technique called somoclonal variation. The company’s genetically engineered tomato variety won’t be ready until 1995. Competitor Calgene expects to be selling its own gene-altered tomato sometime next year.
