Widow to Serve Out Husband’s Senate Term

WASHINGTON — The widow of Democratic Sen. Quentin N. Burdick was sworn in Wednesday to replace him until a special election in North Dakota later this year, boosting the number of women in the Senate to three for the first time.
Jocelyn Burdick, 70, was appointed by North Dakota Gov. George Sinner on Saturday to replace her husband, who died Sept. 8 at age 84. She is the first woman senator from North Dakota.
“I will do my best in the coming weeks to serve the people of North Dakota and to finish Quentin’s unfinished agenda,” she said.
