Hong Kong Police Open Leaflet War on Wife Abuse

Associated Press

Police have begun distributing leaflets to battle a growing problem of wife abuse.

Patricia Walsh, who heads a Hong Kong police group on domestic violence, said many women who have reported abuse have not been given enough information about their legal rights or about where they can seek help.

Linda Kit-lai To, the coordinator of a shelter for battered women, said reported cases of wife abuse have steadily increased since 1988.

To said the number of wife-abuse cases is believed to be much higher than what is reported because Chinese women have traditionally been reluctant to make accusations against their husbands.
