After beating Oklahoma, 20-10, USC (1-0-1) moved into the top 25 of both the Associated Press and USA Today/CNN polls, taking the 22nd spot in each, two places below the Sooners.

Miami (2-0) continued to lead both polls, with 43 first-place votes in the AP and 45 in the USA Today/CNN. Washington continued in second place but closed ground on Miami with 15 first-place votes in the AP poll.

UCLA was four places higher in the AP poll, being ranked No. 11. The Bruins are 12th in the USA Today/CNN after their 17-10 victory over Brigham Young.

After routing Tulsa, 40-7, Kansas (3-0) joined both polls for the first time in 16 years. The Jayhawks were last ranked on Oct. 11, 1976, when they were 15th.
