U.S. Balloonists Set a Record

AMSTERDAM — Two American balloonists set a new world record today by staying airborne for over 139 hours, organizers monitoring their progress in Rotterdam said.
Tony Bradley and Richard Abruzzo--the last competitors aloft in a transatlantic balloon race won Monday by a Belgian team--were floating just off the Moroccan coast this morning, having smashed the previous duration record of 137 hours.
That record was set by Abruzzo’s father, Ben, and two companions during the first transatlantic balloon voyage in 1978.
They plan to land today.
