Tax Form to Include Line for Breast Cancer Study Funds

SACRAMENTO — California taxpayers will be able to make voluntary contributions for breast cancer research on their state income tax returns, under a bill signed into law by Gov. Pete Wilson, his office announced Monday.
The measure, by Assemblywoman Jackie Speier (D-S. San Francisco), is expected to raise about $500,000 each year for the California Breast Cancer Research Fund.
The fund will be one of eight check-off items on the 1992 state income tax form. It replaces the U.S. Olympic Committee Fund, which has raised less than $250,000 annually over the past three years.
Wilson said that he was generally opposed to using the income tax form as a way “to solicit charitable contributions.” But he agreed to make an exception “because of the importance of breast cancer as a public health issue.”
Taxpayers add their donations to their total tax bill--or subtract them from their refunds. The following year, they can deduct them as charitable contributions.
