Glendale : Housing for Seniors

After nine years of planning and repeated delays in obtaining federal grant money, a groundbreaking ceremony took place Monday for the Gardens, a $6-million, 75-unit apartment complex to be built at 333 E. Monterey Road for low-income senior citizens.

The development was started by Soroptimist International of Glendale, a nonprofit businesswomen’s group, and will be operated in partnership with Southern California Presbyterian Homes, a Glendale-based specialist in housing for low-income seniors.

The city is contributing about $750,000 in community housing funds toward the project, which is largely funded by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Completion is expected late next year.
