Back in Business: Six first-run movie theaters will reopen tonight in Hawthorne, one of the Los Angeles area’s least-served districts when it comes to movies. The Plaza 6 Theatres are at the Hawthorne Mall at El Segundo and Hawthorne boulevards. The venture represent a $200,000 investment by the newly formed Inner City Cinemas, which is jointly owned by the AMC Theatre chain and Economic Resources Corp., an African-American-owned firm that operates the three-screen Baldwin Hills theater on South La Brea Avenue. Before the remodeling, the Hawthorne complex was an AMC outlet with a second-run, low-admission policy. Operators say the remodeled complex has all new seating, screens and carpets. Admission will be $6. Upcoming films include Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and Eddie Murphy’s “Distinguished Gentleman.”
