Divers Reportedly Find Elbe Shipwreck

AMSTERDAM — Dutch divers have found the Elbe, one of the 19th Century’s most famous shipwrecks, after six years of secret salvage operations in the North Sea, the Rotterdams Dagblad newspaper reported Thursday.
The Elbe was sailing in 1895 from Bremerhaven, Germany, to Southampton, England, and then New York when it was rammed by a British steamer 45 miles off the Dutch coast.
The vessel sank in less than 20 minutes, taking 334 passengers and crew with it. Only 15 in the crew and five passengers survived.
