SAN FERNANDO : Children’s Tutoring Program Gets Grant

Low-income parents whose children receive tutoring assistance after school at Las Palmas Park received a boost this week to help pay for the program.
The San Fernando-based Immigration Services of Santa Rosa gave the Working Parents Program a one-time grant of $3,500 to help defray the costs of the after-school care project, said Jess Margarito of the city’s Recreation and Community Services Department.
The pilot program was launched in January to provide after-school activities and tutoring to elementary school students, most of them immigrants or the children of immigrants. The City Council provided start-up costs of $23,000 for the six-month project.
Besides providing games and recreational activities, the program enlisted college students to tutor students from San Fernando, Morningside, Gridley Street and Santa Rosa schools.
The normal cost is $15 a week per child, but most parents can only afford to pay part of the fee, especially if they have more than one child.
