World IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : 100 Villagers Feared Dead in Flash Flood

Up to 100 villagers were feared drowned when a flash flood swept away their simple homes in a remote mountainous area of northwestern Colombia, government officials said. The flood swept rocks and mud down a valley in a sparsely populated area near the coffee-growing town of Andes, 120 miles northwest of Bogota, destroying all that lay in its path. Television pictures showed a sea of mud and boulders covering a wide stretch on either side of the Taparto River, a tributary of the Cauca River, and helpless survivors perched on rocks.
