Bangladesh Accused of Rights Violations

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Torture, execution of dissidents and detention without charges are among human rights violations in Bangladesh that show no sign of improving, Amnesty International said in a report today.
The London-based group said that at least 17 people died in government custody in 1992. It also reported cases of torture in a region where Buddhist insurgents are fighting an insurrection.
“Despite some positive measures taken by the government during the past two years, there has been no consistent and sustained improvement in the human rights situation, and improvement is badly needed,” the report said.
The Bangladeshi government dismissed the findings.
“This report is not based on facts,” Interior Minister Abdul Matin Choudhury said. “The human rights situation has improved in the past two years.”
