Tamayo Si; Kahlo, Rivera No: The 1955 painting by Rufino Tamayo, “America,” sold for $2.58 million in an auction at Christie’s in New York on Monday, setting a record price for the artist. But paintings by Frida Kahlo (“My Dress Hangs Here”) and Diego Rivera (“Madre y Nina”) failed to sell. The Kahlo painting had been estimated to sell for $1 million to $1.3 million. A second Tamayo painting, titled “Mujer con Mascara Roja,” from 1940, sold earlier Monday for $1.5 million.
