Quaker Acquires Rival Rice Cake Maker: Quaker Oats Co. is puffing up its already commanding share of the rice cake business by acquiring rival Chico-San from H.J. Heinz Co., the companies said. The purchase price was not disclosed. Quaker has a 63% share of the U.S. rice and popcorn cake market, which grew by 18% last year to $174 million, according to the market research firm Information Resources Inc. Chico-San, acquired by Pittsburgh-based Heinz in 1984, is the second-largest-selling brand, with an 18% market share.
