Davenport Loses in Singles : Tennis: Former Chadwick High student is defeated by 16th-seeded player at Wimbledon.

Lindsay Davenport was eliminated in women’s singles, but two South Bay players were winners in the first round of girls’ singles Saturday at Wimbledon.
Davenport, a former Chadwick High student, lost to 16th-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), in a third-round match. The unseeded Davenport, who was playing in the women’s singles draw for the first time, is 28th in the Virginia Slims rankings. On Monday, Tauziat will play nine-time champion Martina Navratilova, who is seeded second.
But Davenport’s participation in tennis’ most prestigious tournament is not over. On Monday, she will join Scott Davis of Newport Beach in a second-round mixed doubles match against third-seeded Todd Woodbridge of Australia and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain.
On Friday, Davenport and Davis won their first-round match, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, over Mark Keil of Tampa, Fla., and Australian Nicole Provis.
In her other match Friday, Davenport and fellow 17-year-old Chanda Rubin of Lafayette, La. lost to fifth-seeded Zina Garrison-Jackson and Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 7-5, in second-round doubles.
Amanda Basica began her quest to equal or surpass her most recent Grand Slam performance with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kate Warne-Holland of Britain in a first-round girls’ singles match. The 15-year-old Lomita resident reached the final of the girls’ division in the French Open earlier this month.
Janet Lee of Rancho Palos Verdes also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sophie Cortina of Mexico.
Two players with South Bay ties were losers in second-round women’s doubles matches Saturday. Cammy MacGregor, a 1987 Palos Verdes High graduate, and partner Shaun Stafford, were ousted by Gigi Fernandez and Natalia Zvereva, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Defending champions Fernandez and Zvereva are seeded first.
Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills and Shannan McCarthy lost to eighth-seeded Jill Hetherington and Kathy Rinaldi, 6-2, 6-2.
Jim Pugh of Rancho Palos Verdes, a 1990 Wimbledon doubles champion, and Brent Haygarth of South Africa lost their second-round match to 10th-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa and Michael Stich of Germany, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) Friday. Stich was the 1991 singles champion and won the doubles title last year with John McEnroe.
