The chairman of the House Budget Committee proposed boosting the current $4.25-an-hour minimum wage to $6.50, far exceeding figures suggested by Clinton Administration officials. “Someone working full time, their basic living should be paid for with their salaries” and not public assistance, said Rep. Martin Olav Sabo (D-Minn.). Sabo conceded that his proposal “probably won’t excite” the Administration, but it signaled that liberals such as himself might not be happy with a minimum-wage increase they consider too small.
