New Mayor Favors Jewish Settlements in East Jerusalem

JERUSALEM — Jerusalem’s new mayor said Saturday that he favors more Jewish settlements in predominantly Arab East Jerusalem to prevent the city’s division in a peace agreement with Palestinians.
Palestinians want East Jerusalem, seized by Israel from Jordan in 1967, as the capital of their future state. The city’s future will be negotiated later in talks on the final status of Israeli-occupied territories.
