Gulf War Veterans

* At the time of the Persian Gulf War crisis, Ross Perot said, “Forty thousand American boys will come home in coffins” (or words to that effect). Vice President Al Gore got a kick out of reminding Perot of that statement during the NAFTA debate (Nov. 10). Now we see in a Times editorial (Nov. 12) that “Something has made thousands of American veterans of the Persian Gulf War sick. . . .” And in that same editorial, “Among the components of that syndrome: pains in muscles and joints, deep fatigue and numerous cancers.”

Maybe Perot was closer to the facts than he knew. Only instead of coming home in coffins, they came home to coffins.
