Kim’s Runs Lead Laguna Hills Past St. Monica

SANTA MONICA — Fred Kim ran for 228 yards and two touchdowns to lead Laguna Hills over Santa Monica St. Monica, 29-16, Friday in the first round of the Southern Section Division VIII playoffs at Santa Monica College.
Laguna Hills’ next opponent will be Yucaipa, which defeated Artesia, 35-27.
Laguna Hills (8-3) scored on its first possession with an eight-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a one-yard quarterback sneak by Justin Vedder. Sako Yakinian faked the point after, Vedder, the holder, got up, rolled left and passed to Erich Derbsch for the two-point conversion.
In the first quarter, St. Monica (8-3) did not make it past its 35-yard line and was held to nine total yards.
The Mariners finally got something going in the second quarter with an 11-play, 80-yard drive, scoring on a 10-yard pass from Oscar Casillas to Giovanni Cappalonga. After a two-point conversion, the score was tied, 8-8.
Laguna Hills scored each time it had the ball in the third quarter.
