Prospects of Finding Malaysia Survivors Fade

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Even as international rescuers brought in tracker dogs and sensors able to detect human heartbeats, prospects dwindled Monday for finding survivors in the ruins of a collapsed apartment building.
About 50 people were trapped when a landslide felled the 12-story building Saturday.
Hopes surged briefly Monday when a note with the scrawled words, “I am still alive,” was attached to a line lowered into the debris, the Bernama News Agency said.
Police Inspector General Hanif Omar said tracker dogs brought by a French team pinpointed a spot where the line was lowered. But no further contact was made and no voice could be heard from the spot.
The official death toll is one, with two injured.
