DIVISION IV-AA GIRLS’ SEMIFINALS : Despite Robinson, Santa Ynez Beats Costa Mesa in Overtime

Costa Mesa senior Heather Robinson played an outstanding game, but Santa Ynez was a little better.

Robinson scored 36 points, 19 in the second half, but missed a free throw with 10 seconds left that would have given the Mustangs a one-point lead.

In overtime, Robinson fouled out without scoring a point as the Pirates went on to an 83-75 overtime victory in a Southern Section Division IV-AA semifinal Saturday at Lompoc High.

The Pirates (24-4) led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter (35-23) and by nine (51-42) with 5:07 left to play.

But Robinson almost single-handedly brought Costa Mesa (19-7) back. She scored 12 third-quarter points, including a three-pointer that brought the Mustangs to within 55-54.

In the fourth, baskets by Robinson and Erin Brown again cut the Pirates’ lead to 69-68.

Santa Ynez’s Kacie Scoggin was fouled with 10 seconds remaining, but missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. Robinson grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled by Kristi Rohr, who had 24 points.

Trailing 71-70, Robinson who had made all seven free throws until then, made the first but missed the second, forcing overtime.

Santa Ynez will play its sixth consecutive IV-AA final and second in a row against Playa del Rey St. Bernard.
