The controversial state program of culling wild wolves has ended for the winter season, with 98 of the animals killed at a cost of $135,000, state officials said. The program, carried out in a 4,000-square-mile area south of Fairbanks, used ground-based trapping methods to snare wolves. It was launched to boost populations of caribou, a prey species for wolves.
