Letters

* “The Power, Pleasures of the Pen” (Column One, April 3) really caught my eye. I agree with Jerry Lee Hill, “There is nothing that can take the place of a letter.”

Being a pack rat who resists discarding personal letters, I have special notes going back 50 years . . . or more. I call them my “treasured possessions.” They stir up memories to make me laugh, or cry, remembering the joys or sorrows of life.

When my son left home for Alaska in 1973 he answered our letter to him with a quote: “Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land” (Proverbs 25:25).

Everybody loves to get a letter. Thanks for giving us new insight in “The Power, Pleasures of the Pen.”
