LOS ANGELES : LAPD Officer Charged in Freeway Shootings

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer suspected of shooting at two cars on an Interstate 10 off-ramp in Colton was charged Tuesday with a felony.
Officer Robert Cardona, 35, is scheduled to be arraigned today in San Bernardino Municipal Court on a charge of firing shots at an occupied vehicle, said a spokeswoman in the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office.
Cardona, assigned to the Rampart Division, has been held on $50,000 bail since his arrest Sunday night.
Cardona allegedly fired several shots from a 9-millimeter handgun at cars leaving the westbound freeway at Pepper Avenue, prompting back-to-back 911 calls.
Los Angeles Police Lt. John Dunkin said the 12-year LAPD veteran was on vacation at the time of his arrest.
Nobody was hit in either shooting incident. The second motorist went to a service station to call authorities and while on the phone described a man walking out of the shadows at that moment and toward the gas station.
