PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Ten Others Waived Along With Bell

Tight end Nick Bell was the most prominent player cut by the Raiders, but not the only one. Ten others had to be trimmed to get the roster down to the maximum of 60.

The others cut were veteran offensive lineman Ken Lanier, rookie guard Roosevelt Patterson, safeties R.J. Kors and Joe King, defensive lineman Ferric Collons, linebacker Brian Jones, cornerback Darren Butler, wide receiver Doug Thomas, and offensive tackles Willie Stubbins and Doug Skartvedt.

Because he had a sprained ankle, Jones was waived injured, meaning that, if nobody claims him, he will wind up on the Raiders’ injured-reserve list.

Lanier, 35, who has been hobbled this summer by a leg injury, was trying to make it into his 14th NFL season. A fifth-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 1981, Lanier signed with the Raiders last season as a free agent.

Patterson is the only one of the team’s six 1994 draft choices to have been released. The chance for Patterson, a 6-foot-3, 305-pounder taken in the fifth round from Alabama, to make the squad suffered when veteran Max Montoya changed his mind and returned after announcing his retirement.

“He didn’t come along as fast as we needed him to,” said Coach Art Shell of Patterson. “It’s a tough business. We feel we have people here who are better at this time.”

Business is about to get tougher.

The Raiders will have to cut seven more players by Sunday.

The Raiders can then put five players, from those having less than a year’s NFL experience, on their practice squad.
