High Court OKs Vote in Black District

ATLANTA — The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the November election in a specially drawn, black-majority congressional district to proceed by staying a lower court ruling against the voting plan.
A group of white plaintiffs who live in the 11th Congressional District sued the state earlier this year, accusing the state Legislature of racial gerrymandering in drawing its boundaries.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this month declared the Georgia district unconstitutional and blocked the election.
The Supreme Court order issued late Friday stays that ruling until the full court can hear the appeal. Larry Chesin, one of the plaintiff’s lawyers, said he didn’t expect the full court to rule until June.
