PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Century Fumbles, Folds in Second Half

SANTA ANA — Century gave away the ball and then the game Friday night, as the Centurions lost their homecoming game to West Covina, 26-17, at the Santa Ana Bowl.

The Bulldogs capitalized on three second-half turnovers and 72 yards in Century penalties to overcome a 17-7 deficit.

Century (2-3), which turned over the ball five times, played well in the first half, gaining 159 total yards in offense and holding West Covina (3-2) to 95.

The Centurions held the ball for more than 15 minutes in the first half behind the running of Beau Wallace and Nick Andrade, and had a 10-7 lead.

Andrade began the Centurions’ first scoring drive with a 52-yard run down the sideline. Wallace took the ball in five plays later on a 15-yard draw play with 2 minutes 5 seconds left in the first quarter.

Century opened the second half with a 76-yard drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Wallace and led, 17-7, with 6:03 left in the third.

Then the Centurions collapsed. Andrade ran 23 yards but fumbled. The Bulldogs recovered and scored on an 80-yard halfback option on the next play to make it 17-13 with 2:07 left in the third.

West Covina then sealed the victory when Greg Wardlaw intercepted a pass from Stanley Villanueva, and scored three plays later on a 24-yard pass from Henry Frank to Wardlaw.
