Arafat Suffers a Loss of Power

GAZA CITY — It was not a good day for Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, shunned by Israel and Jordan as the two nations signed their historic peace treaty Wednesday.
Arafat, who was not invited to the ceremony, met in Egypt with President Clinton on Wednesday and then rushed back to his Gaza City headquarters to catch the second half of the ceremonies on TV.
Five minutes after turning on his set, as Clinton addressed the crowd on the Israeli-Jordanian border, the electricity went off in Arafat’s office.
The PLO chairman ordered lunch instead.
