Northridge, Master’s Play 120 Minutes for Nothing : Soccer: For the Mustangs, scoreless tie with the Matadors feels almost like a victory.

NORTHRIDGE — Two coaches, standing fewer than 15 yards from each other, with entirely different perspectives on the same game.

Both using f-words to describe the experience.

Coach Jim Rickard of The Master’s College, whose team is bound for the NAIA playoffs, said he had “fun” watching his team forge a 0-0 standoff Friday night against Cal State Northridge in a nonconference soccer match at North Campus Stadium.

Coach Marwan Ass’ad didn’t enjoy what he saw. “Frustrating, man,” he said. “Frustrating.”

Northridge (7-8-1) took 27 shots. Six were stopped by Master’s goalies. Most of the others went high, wide--or both. One, off the foot of Steven Faggiolly, was so tantalizingly close--off the crossbar--with about two minutes left in the final of two extra periods.

And so the trend continues. Northridge, which concludes its season at home today at 4 p.m. against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has been shut out in its last eight matches. The Matadors’ last goal came Oct. 2 during a 5-0 victory over Loyola Marymount. Their last goal during a home game came Sept. 18 during a 3-2 loss to UC Irvine.

“I just hope we win tomorrow,” Ass’ad said. “If we finish .500, hopefully everybody will forget about this season.”
