Pac Bell to Request Long Distance Market Entry: Bolstered by a state law for which it lobbied heavily last year, the telephone company plans today to seek permission from a federal court to offer long-distance service in California. The San Francisco-based company is prohibited from entering the long-distance market by the 1984 consent decree governing the breakup of AT&T.; The California Legislature last year passed a law supporting Pacific Bell’s entry into long distance. Pacific Bell will seek a waiver directly from U.S. District Judge Harold Greene, author of the consent decree.
