Orange County

Times Staff and Wire Reports

February Jobless Figures Due: Orange County’s employment figures for February are to be released Friday by the state Employment Development Department. Because job statistics are a key monthly measure of the local economy’s health, the political and business leaders of the financially strapped county are likely to pore over the latest numbers even more than usual. Economists have said the county’s December bankruptcy filing and related fiscal woes could slow but should not derail recovery from the recession of the early 1990s. The unemployment rate for January stood at 5.4%. The county’s jobless rate has risen in February for six of the past 10 years.
