Texas’ Ex-Secretary of State Is Elected Mayor of Dallas

DALLAS — Former Texas Secretary of State Ron Kirk was elected mayor of Dallas on Saturday in a landslide, becoming the first black elected mayor of any major city in the state.
With 865 of 875 precincts reporting, Kirk had 68,541 votes, or 62%. Lawyer Darrell Jordan trailed with 23% and City Councilman Domingo Garcia had 13%.
Kirk, 40, served as secretary of state under former Gov. Ann Richards before joining a Dallas law firm.
In San Antonio, City Councilman Bill Thornton faces a runoff with community activist Kay Turner.
In El Paso, first-term Mayor Larry Francis was reelected over engineer Carlos Ramirez and City Council Rep. Gene Finke.
