Unions Ratify Settlement in Grocery Workers Strike: About 32,000 clerks, butchers and baggers involved in the strike and lockout at three Northern California grocery stores have ratified a contract settlement. Members of the Oakland-based United Food & Commercial Workers Union who work at the Safeway, Lucky and Save Mart stores approved a three-year agreement that basically extends the previous contract. The agreement was approved by 91.5% of those voting by mail, according to tabulations released Tuesday. A similar agreement has been reached with Albertson’s stores and is expected to be ratified by mail. About 16,000 unionized employees walked out of 208 Safeway stores on April 6. Representatives for the chains could not be reached for comment.
