Baltimore Evening Sun to Close: The newspaper, which once carried the sharp prose of curmudgeonly sage H.L. Mencken, will cease publication Sept. 15 because of declining circulation, Sun Publisher and Chief Executive Mary Junck said. Junck told a news conference that the newspaper company expects to lose about 15,000 subscribers as Evening Sun readers are switched over to the morning Baltimore Sun. The Evening Sun, published Mondays through Fridays, had a circulation of 86,360 in March, whereas the morning paper had 264,583. She said the company expects about 50 employees to leave the company through buyouts or layoffs. The Sun is owned by Times Mirror Co., which also owns the Los Angeles Times.
