From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The United States said it will maintain an embassy in Burundi despite an attack on a convoy carrying the U.S. ambassador. “I’m not aware at all that Ambassador [Robert] Krueger is thinking of returning to the United States,” said State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns. Left dead in the Wednesday ambush was an officer of the Burundian army and a military observer from the Organization of African Unity. Six other military personnel and two drivers were wounded. Burns said the car in which Krueger was riding was struck by one bullet.
