Would-Be AFL-CIO President Hires Advisers: The normally closed-door process of choosing a new president for the labor federation is looking more and more like a political campaign. Thomas Donahue, the secretary-treasurer who wants to succeed outgoing President Lane Kirkland, hired veteran Democratic campaign advisers Tad Devine and Bob Shrum as consultants this week. Devine said he and his partner will advise Donahue on setting up a campaign office, selecting campaign workers and honing his message to laborers, whose leaders will select a president in October.
