Eating Pizza May Protect Against Prostate Cancer

From Times staff and wire reports

A prescription for pizza can prevent problems in the prostate, according to Harvard University researchers. A new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute shows that men who eat at least 10 servings a week of tomato-based foods, such as pizza and spaghetti sauce, are as much as 45% less likely to develop prostate cancer.

Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a Harvard researcher, said that tomato-based products and strawberries were the only foods among 46 fruits and vegetables checked that seemed to have a protective effect against prostate cancer. The results came from a six-year study of the dietary habits of 47,000 men.
