Sad End Awaits the Pigeons of Venice

VENICE, Italy — The city of Venice declared Tuesday that the pigeons in St. Mark’s Square are a health hazard and must be captured and killed.
Mayor Massimo Cacciari said veterinary tests showed that about 30% of the 5,000 or so pigeons that flock to the famous landmark are infected with a form of salmonella that can be transmitted to humans.
City health authorities have recommended luring the pigeons into cages with grain and killing them with a lethal gas.
