House Members Head Home for Holidays

WASHINGTON — Led by Republicans who vowed to work until “hell freezes over” to solve the budget crisis, House members on Thursday found a way to get home for the holidays without adjourning even though the government was still partially shut down.
First they worked on a resolution that would give them a long Christmas weekend, but by the time the afternoon’s debate had ended, they had voted mostly on party lines, 224 to 186, to get out of town by tonight for at least five days.
They would come back swiftly--on approximately 12 hours’ notice--if there was a breakthrough on the budget.
A handful of Republicans, like Iowa’s Greg Ganske, objected to leaving town with such pressing business unresolved and 260,000 federal workers off the job.
