Council Moves to Make Parks, Beaches ‘Drug-Free Zones’

The Los Angeles City Council has moved to make all public beaches and parks “drug-free zones” to help crack down on drug use and trafficking.
Under state law, people convicted on drug charges in a drug-free zone can have an additional year of prison time tacked on to their sentences.
Councilwoman Ruth Galanter introduced a motion last week to make several Westside beaches and parks drug-free zones and on Tuesday, Councilwoman Laura Chick amended the proposal to cover parks and beaches citywide.
City staff is scheduled to report back within one moth on a process for selecting which sites should get the special designation and how to post signs and train police officers about patrolling the zones.
