Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Ex-Basketball Star Is Charged in Robbery

A former professional basketball player has been charged with accosting a White House aide at gunpoint and forcing him to withdraw cash from automated teller machines. Charles Vincent “Hawkeye” Whitney, 38, a former North Carolina State University star who played two seasons in the National Basketball Assn., was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping. On the night of Jan. 26, Whitney and another man allegedly accosted Mark Fabiani, the White House spokesman in the Whitewater case, as he left a subway stop in suburban Alexandria, Va. Police said Fabiani was hustled into a car and driven into Washington, where he was forced to withdraw $1,600 from ATMs at two banks. He was released unharmed. Police said they are still seeking a second suspect.
