The Senate argued sharply over a Republican proposal to extend indefinitely its Whitewater investigation. The Senate Whitewater Committee’s authority expired last Thursday, and its string of hearings was replaced by hours of debate on the Senate floor as minority Democrats made good on their threat to block a vote on the proposal.
