BELIEVABLE BEAUTY

It is disturbing that an acting coach of Larry Moss’ caliber had this to say about Elisabeth Shue’s performance in “Leaving Las Vegas”: “The only problem was believing that someone that beautiful could have such low self-esteem” (“The Acting Round Table,” by Elaine Dutka, March 24).

Physical beauty is no barometer of emotional well-being, but such comments unfortunately reinforce a host of female stereotypes.

Shue’s appearance in no way lessens the believability of her part. She is capable of feeling and portraying the full range of human emotions no matter how “beautiful” she is.
